The Role of Law in an Inter-Connected World

The 27th Young Leaders Conference of the Council for the United States and Italy took place in Philadelphia on September 22-24, 2011 on the theme "The Role of Law in an Inter-Connected World".
A group of 50 participants under 40 years of age, coming from Italy, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Turkey, and the UK, discussed how laws, legal systems, and practices impact on individuals in their everyday lives, on the conduct of business in a domestic and international context, and governments in their actions inside and outside their borders.
The proceedings were stimulated by presentations given by Judge Michael Baylson (US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania), Melva Exner (Director of Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary, AgustaWestland Philadelphia Corporation), Edward Rendell (Former Mayor of Philadelphia and Governor of Pennsylvania), and Gary Steuer (Chief Cultural Officer, City of Philadelphia).
The conference contained a significant Philadelphia component, including Friday dinner at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (with a private tour of the “Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus” exhibition), a private visit to the “Money in Motion” exhibit at the Federal Reserve Bank, a trolley tour of outdoor murals by Philadelphia artists, and a guided walking tour of sites of historical interest in downtown Philadelphia.
Partial funding for the conference was provided by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Roy A. Hunt Foundation, IBM Corporation, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
