Giuliano Amato, former PM and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification

2011 - Meeting with Giuliano Amato

On Wednesday, March 9, 2011, the Council for the U.S. and Italy held a meeting with Prof. Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification.

Prof. Amato drew a broad-brush portrait of the formation of the Italian nation from the Proclamation of the Monarchy in 1861 till today, through the 20th century’s wars, and subsequent economic development within the framework of the European Union. He then fielded questions on present-day Italy and prospects for the future.

Many alumni of the Young Leaders program and fellows of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship of the German Marshall Fund of the US (of which the Italian branch of the Council is a partner) participated in the event thanks to a videoconference hosted by Assonime in Rome and by the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification began on March 17, and will culminate on June 2 in Rome. Heads of state of the 26 EU countries, besides the Presidents of USA, Russia, and countries with large Italian communities, have been invited to attend.
