Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of the WFP

2010 - Meeting with Josette Sheeran

On Wednesday May 26, 2010 the Council for the United States and Italy held a meeting with Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian organization in the world.

The initiative was dedicated to the Alumni of the Young Leaders Program and was made possible through the efforts of Ambassador Pietro Sebastiani (Head of the Permanent Mission of Italy at the United Nations and Young Leader at Naple 1995).

During the meeting, Ms Sheeran described the massive humanitarian aid plan which was implemented by the WFP in Haiti after the devastating earthquake that struck the island last January, and answered questions. In Haiti the WFP is developing one of the most complex operations of food assistance never carried out, reaching 3.5 million people after the initial post-earthquake emergency.
WFP is now working on targeted programs to provide school lunches, nutritional support and full food rations for the underprivileged.

A video connection with Myrta Kaulard, Country Director of WFP in Haiti, recounting her experience in the field, accompanied the discussion.
